Case Studies
With the financial pressures existing in hospitals today, material management departments are often charged with the complex task of reducing the cost of supplies, particularly expensive surgical implants. Because physicians, not hospital purchasing staff, decide which implants are used, it is difficult to control these costs. Materials management is therefore challenged with aligning the often conflicting forces of physician preferences and hospital cost-reduction initiatives.
Traditionally, financial goals have been hard to achieve because implant utilization data is difficult to access and even more difficult to analyze. Exporting, “scrubbing” and analyzing data is labor intensive. It is also difficult to manage because of the many variables – such as patient age, acuity, procedure, length of stay, payor policies, physician practice disparity, vendor product breadth, etc. – that are required to engage physician and administrative stakeholders in the discussions.

VUEMED and The Optime Group commissioned a survey in July 2011 to evaluate physicians' perspective on their relationships with supply chain/materials organizations, their contribution to the product selection/purchasing decisions, and the impact of healthcare reform on their practice.
The findings will be presented as part of the CMO panel discussion at IDN Summit: Achieving Supply Chain Success
